thanks for the info, usually I tend to avoid being the kind of gamer that tries to get numeric values behind game phenomena but trying to explain shields left me with a lot of questions.

Apologies for the confusion, the detection stat is not a range in km, but a strength rating. Sensor detection is essentially how well you can 'hear' the signatures emitted by other ships. There's no hard range because if a ship is emitting a large signal, it can be detected further away. Hope this ...

You can drop stuff from your inventory onto the ground (space allowing) by selecting the item tnen "Discard" ("Unequip" first if you have it on the hotbar). Since bots are fairly dumb, they can't survive in some situations that involve dangerous environment. Not a bug, but still... So far, I haven't found a way to give my NPCs weapons I want them to use. go into the lockers before spawning AI and put the gear in there you want them to use - you can remove any +0 tools or weapons if you don't trust the AI but they're quite good about taking better stuff...
