When you look at the Sensors panel on the Scientists station the planet will show up as a scannable item. Click on it and you will receive basic information, if you'll need an exosuit it will say "WARNING: HIGH TEMPERATURE" or something to that effect. You can also scan for lifeforms on the planet.

It literally says the turning speed is reduced due to inertia. Nowhere is any mention of reduced thrust.

The most efficient way is what you already described, put the good stuff in the cargo hold, blast the shields, take the ship and then move it over that way.
