Some suggestions; Redshirts and Sending Crew to the Brig

Post by Kuro » Tue Aug 18, 2015 11:32 am

I've not played the game for long, so bear in mind these are just quick ideas off the top of my head, and are not neccessarily ideas that are particularly insightful.

Have an additional group of (optional) slots for disposable redshirts, who don't have much purpose other than as cannon fodder for away missions, and are unable to effect anything else, but who can be promoted to officer positions should an officer leave. This would prevent the akward situation where you want to play pulsar, but have 5 friends logged onto teamspeak, meaning 1 person would be left out. At least members over the 5 person cap could be part of the fun in some small way at the disgression of the game host.

I understand that eventually there will be moderator functions which can be used to deal with troublesome strangers by taking a metagame approach of removing them from the game, however in addition to that I think it would be fun if there was a way to deal with troublesome friends within the context of the game such as being able to put them in the brig for a minute or demote them to a redshirt or something. That was something I noticed when watching livestreams, there's always that 1 friend who will do nothing but constantly be annoyng until the captain is like "So help me god, if I could shoot you I would!" lol

They're both interesting ideas that have been thrown around a bit already.

I think the general consensus with brigs was that it would be purely for roleplaying purposes and that really once the moderation powers are in it would get little use.

Having additional crew members was suggested by someone but I think the thought was that they would be AI mercenaries for away missions and boaridng enemy ships...
I do like the idea of being able to have a larger human crew, but I think unless there are more things to do it would be boring for anyone who didn't have a direct role - but I also am a big supporter of having more things to do on the ship, so if we can get more things, I would very much like larger crews.

Someone else mentioned something about brigs regarding kick/ban, feature, then someone else explained it to be strictly for RP reasons... Same as here, and my response was:
What brigs could be used for is... Capturing enemies or civilians... Let's think more pirate-like.

Because current playstyle is pretty much just fight. I imagine in the future possibilities will branch out, so you can play a scavanger vessel, martial vessel, pirate, research, escort...

(I am not daydreaming here-- Just pointing out brigs could have a use AT SOME POINT... LATE... in the game development IF features to play as mentioned above will get added :D )

Going back to the title of the topic: Definite yes for kick and ban :)
Also... In this topic I was goin' on about some policing play style regarding the whole GX 31 - CU boarding protocol... Another use for brigs: Captured smugglers? (although the way it's described in the protocol, punishment would probably be death anyways, right? But still... COULD be a potential use :P)

Ugh... I should prbably start a topic about this, since it's scattered all over forums heh

Capturing people could be a used as part of a mission, or if one of the factions were evil buggers you could sell prisoners off to slavers for extra cash.

You could capture NPCs, couldn't capture players though.

This would require a new boarding tactic to get the NPC as your prisoner and considering the enemies respawn constantly that would be very hard.

1) Board enemy ship.
2)Fight to life support section.
3)Destroy the thing that they respawn at.
4)If players on vessel out number remaining enemies, enemy units surrender as they do not want permadeath.

Context menu to talk, teleport to brig or execute.

The more prisoners you are holding on your ship increases the chance of escape. Keep prisoner numbers low, or execute prisoners to keep rebellion risk low.
Rebellion risk suppressed by x amount if player character is within y distance of brig. Useful for suppressing prisoners but drags a player away from their station.

Thoughts?

Red shirts would work best on the USS enterprise, a massive ship filled with hundreds, on the small ships we use, not really.
Think of it like this, a disposable unit is taking 1/6 of your food, water, and air. It would be better to make them fly the ship and do stuff, but then that would just be a sixth crew member.

redshirts would be awesome! expendables that can get promolted if they survive long enough, like in ufo1 ufo2 terrof from the deep, tghe more missions they do the more skills they get.
