How to play in Single Player?

Post by Games4Kickz » Sun Sep 06, 2015 8:30 am

Hi Guys

sorry for the noob question. I saw the game is for 1-5 players, so I have to assume you can play it alone to practice and figure things out.
I didn't want to join a crew and not knowing at all what I'm doing so learning by myself first was the logical step I thought.

The only role I can select is Captain when playing alone and I cannot figure out how to fly/move my ship anywhere or at all.
When playing around with the jump controls they get stuck asking me for a target but I got no clue how to do that.

The manuals are covering each class but don't really make it clear enough for me how to do any non-captain tasks as a captain.

Again, apologies for this noob question but I just can't figure it out.

Kind Regards,
Kickz

OK, I finally figured out through tinkering around that there was a TAB menu and was able to add bots for the other classes and select a random target to jump to.
I jumped right into a zone where several ships attacked me and I died in seconds.

As I'm a big supporter of indie games I'm not giving up just yet but when trying to figure this thing out in single player it is extremely overwhelming.

In Single-Player
How do you detect planets and jump to them?
How do take full control of the ship to fly on to a planet and land it manually in single player?
How do you leave the Ship and explore a planet?
How do you take manual control of the turrets and defend your ship?

I read the manuals and they all seem to be written in the perspective of a person playing that role and I could not apply any of the Piloting knowledge for example as I'm forced to play Captain in single player and don't have the Pilot view and therefore can't fly the ship as it is explained in the Pilot manual.

Is there anywhere a video or manual I can read that covers the full TAB screen and how to control everything as Captain with Bots?

Anyone that can help/reply would be appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Kickz

Hi there! It's actually quite playable in single player if you can work with the limitations (I played a few hours on the Stargazer last night in SP!). The bots aren't totally refined and have a few quirks, but the game is still actively in development and will get patched together to be more uniform and innately understandable.

The photos that I link to in this are from the Stargazer specifically, but they're similar enough in the other ships.

In the galaxy map (the "M" key by default), planets can be found at 'named' sectors like this. I don't know of a way to search for them directly, but if you hover over sectors in the map view, sectors that have a name and not just a number always contain a planet.

There's no way to fly the ship directly onto the planet. Instead, once you're in the same system as a planet, you can beam down to the planet using the teleporter pad on your ship.
I would also suggest going to the scientist's station and click on the 'planet' detected object, because the planet may require an exosuit (no oxygen, high temp, acidic, etc). It'll warn you in big red text if it's a hostile environment.

As for flying the ship itself in space, you can go to the pilot's station in the front of the ship and press the "R" key by default. There's no tooltip currently (I think there should be!). Just a side note, if you have the Pilot bot manning the pilot's station, then you can't control the station itself while the bot (or anyone else) is using it. Same goes for the turrets too.

You can walk up to the two smaller turrets and press "R" to use them, so long as they're not in use. There's no skill or class requirement to man the two smaller turrets (or the pilot's station, for that matter). The main turret may say "You need the advanced operator talent", which is a skill point that the player will need to allocate if they are any class except for weapons (weapons get the skill automatically).

There's an older devlog #38 (starting at ~6:13) where they talk about how to set up and use the bots. The UI is a bit different but the underlying mechanics and methods are exactly the same. They also talk about the pilot AI in the most recent devlog #58 (starting at ~5:32).

There are a couple of things I want to point out specifically regarding bots.

First, after finishing a fight, if you have Pibot piloting the ship, I would recommend kicking them off the station (set "man station" to zero) and fly the ship the blue loot from the destroyed ships. The pilot bot does not collect the scrap/loot from destroyed ships. At worst, you'll end up with 2x scrap (@ 350 credits each), or you might end up with a rare weapon. Just keep that limitation in mind.

Also, make sure the weapon bot is set to "Man Turret" and not "Man Station". Man Station might make the weapbot stand in front of the missile screen and not control the main cannon. (This is obviously bad).
I would personally suggest not giving the "Advanced Operator" skill to any of the other bots, so that you have a dedicated gunner on the main cannon. The other two smaller turrets do autofire (at a slightly reduced rate compared to manned), but the main cannon does not fire unless it is manned by a player or bot.

This is definitely one of those games that once you get over a bit of a learning curve, the game is much easier to understand.

Hello there!

The Single player and multi players mechanics are exactly the same, any class can pilot the ship or man a turret, but they may not be able to do it as well as the specialized class would. Even if the manual is written to help a specific class there are no restrictions to other classes from filling in that role.

To fly the ship walk up to the flight screen and press "R" this should put you in piloting mode and give you the option to switch between a variety of camera and flight modes, you can read more about this here: http://www.pulsarthegame.com/pilot/

Planets are currently in sectors that are named, you can view these sectors on your Starmap (pressing M or going through the TAB menu). To warp to a sector you need to align the ship to a sector and charge the warp drive. If you have a Pilot bot they should line the ship up to your designated sector (As a captain you can designate a sector via right clicking on it in the Starmap). You can find more details about the TAB menu and the Starmap here: http://www.pulsarthegame.com/manual/

The teleport screen will allow you to teleport to other ships, planets and stations. Simply click on the "select" button to teleport!

Pressing "R" will give you manual control of the ships turrets, if you are not the weapons specialist you will need the "Advanced Operator" Talent to use the Mega-Turret station!

The manuals should still be relevant! Feel free to check out our video devlogs for more information. There are also some really good YouTube videos made by the community which do a pretty good job of describing a lot of the systems and how they work.

We should also mention that AI Bots are still early, we have a lot more planned for them in the future and if they seem unintelligent or broken that is why!

Hope this helps / clarifies! The next update (Beta 2) should help people who are just starting out.

Wow, thank you so much guys for the explanations. I will try that out again for sure. I can't wait to join a proper crew ones I feel I understand more of the classes and UI interfaces :)

Very much appreciate you guys taking your time to reply with such detail.

Kind Regards,
Kickz

Hey glad to see this topic. What about the engineering bot? I saw that when I was in combat, my reactor heat was in the 3000's and he still hadn't activated the use of coolant, does he do this himself or what? I had to activate it on the wall behind him.

One thing I noticed is that my Pibot would not fly into the repair station or dock with a warp ring. Also I could not manually fly the ship and do it myself without dismissing the bot first.
