“Designation: Infected. Origin: Unknown. Species: Unknown. Classification: High-order Asset. Photo: Artist rendering of the retelling about the fall of █████, as told by one of the 4 survivors, a shaken C.U. Officer. Event resulted in the loss of 2 C.U. ships and an older Stargazer model, as well as the planet becoming the first known celestial body inhabited by the Infected. It is interesting to note that the so-called ‘Carriers’ at the time used tendrils as a way to infect other ships, whereas they now use Spores.”

“Experiment 13: Several drones were placed in the way of oncoming Carriers. Each drone was programmed the same way and given the same basic components, minus a warp drive. 2 drones managed to dodge the tendrils until a Caustic Acid filled the sector and melted them away, 1 drone was hit directly in the reactor causing the destruction of both vessels, 2 drones were successfully boarded, and 1 drone kamikaze’d into the Carrier’s hull soon after the acid began to appear. Both boarded drones successfully escaped and were isolated, but soon after began to attack anything alive in sight. Both drones then began to slowly develop cancerous growths on their outer hulls until they were completely covered, at which point they became somewhat sturdier and able to regenerate. Subsequently, both drones developed a single, long tendril close to their thrusters. Interestingly, most of the drone’s components remained intact and were even improved in some areas. Both drones have been incinerated.”

“Experiment 27: An experimental large missile ship has been deployed into an oncoming carrier and has been instructed to maintain close distance. It is equipped with fast-recharging shield designed to resist physical damage. It is accompanied by 2 cloaked vessels armed with nuclear warheads, ordered to hold back until the missile ship is boarded. Early in the battle, the missile ship is able to effectively hold its ground against the Carrier via dodging and occasionally because of its shield, while the Carrier took considerable damage. However, the Carrier began to catch and fling back some of the missile, though the missile ship was able to dodge them. The first time it flung a missile back, the Carrier managed to hit one of the cloaked vessels, temporarily depowering it due to the explosion, and then pierced it with a tendril, allowing smaller creatures to board. The secondary cloaked vessels tried to board and initiate self-destruction on the compromised vessel, but due to how our teleporters operated at the time, this enabled the smaller Infected creatures to board it as well. Fortunately, one surviving crew member managed to initiate the self-destruction protocol on both ships before they perished. The missile ship, seeing the mission as too dangerous to continue, began to charge its warp drive, but was hit by a large amount of debris and one of the Carrier’s tendrils. We lost contact with this ship shortly afterwards. Emergency response and Cleanup ships arrived to find the Carrier and missile ship missing. Not long after, encountered Carriers began to carry Spores while their tendrils grew much shorter and less used in combat.”

“Designation: The Swarm. Origin: Runaway nano-machines from an unknowing source, likely has active counterparts. Classification: Contained/Dangerous. Video: Recovered footage of a stolen C.U. Intrepid’s wreckage outside of containment site, suggesting containment is either recent or was recently penetrated and reestablished.”

“Scans indicate nano-machines house minimal computational power, instead focusing on thruster ability and heat reduction mechanisms for unlimited flight at high-speeds. However, they are still able to recognize friends and foes, and communicate at a level of basic coordination, never colliding nor straying too far from the others.”

“Attempts at controlling or hacking into the computers of any nano-machine has failed, as their programming was too enigmatic for our computers to directly understand. Current decoding efforts have so far enabled common viruses to affect them.”

“Experiment 3: A single outdated Intrepid model was remotely piloted outside the containment zone. Containment very briefly interrupted, allowing a very small amount of nano-machines out. Nano-machines attempted to rejoin the Swarm for a few minutes before heading towards the Intrepid. Instead of boring straight through and exiting the hull, the nano-machines dug into the circuitry of the ship and began to split in pieces. Intrepid ordered to leave sector and return to base; upon arrival the Intrepid was fired upon by extremely heavy focus lasers, permanently disabling warp capabilities. Subject Intrepid is currently in stasis while nano-machines are still active inside.”

“Name: Lesia Driay. Status: Alive. Assessment: Part of the Milyateneu’s crew, a hired smuggling ship assigned to deliver IoI-3786|11|A to distant facilities. After a firefight during a forced inspection of their ship, the Milyateneu used their cargo against their attackers, causing a catastrophic explosion within the Inspection Station before escaping. The Milyateneu then became hostile and intended to sell IoI-3786|11|A for a higher profit, though we have managed to prevent this and whittle down their crew down to the captain and Lesia. Target is currently attempting to report to Colonial Union Command in exchange for safety, but has been unable to thanks to several convenient incidents. Assignment: Termination, Priority 3.”
