What's available in the latest alpha build?

Post by Ghinao » Sat Oct 18, 2014 3:21 am

I'm simply curious as to what all there is to do in the alpha. I've seen all of the devlogs, but there's very little detail about what exactly is available to use/play in the alpha. I know there are two playable ships atm. There's also a bot ship that can be boarded (at great risk). What I don't know is how many enemy ships there are (roughly)? Is it just the security drone and bot ship? Is that space station/hub accessible at all? How many sectors are there? Basically what is available to do/play/see in the most recent build of the game?

If I remember correctly, there are currently 5 different "ships" to fight against.
1) Small Drones- Easy pickings most of the time, the name is what you get. Not boardable.
2) Security Drones- If you have a decent shield and a decent main gunner, typically not too bad. Not boardable.
3) Tactical Drones- These guys deploy viruses. They can be annoying, particularly in tandem with other drones. Not boardable.
4) W.D. Transport- The boardable ship you mentioned. There's no oxygen ob board, so do that at your own risk. Perhaps more importantly, they'll send robots to board your ship. Doesn't take many shots from your trusty phaser pistol to dispose of them, but it doesn't take many for them to dispose of you either.
5) The Sentinel- I hesitated to include this one in the list, because there's only one, but this is the current "sector commander" or boss that's in the game. An interesting, and by no means easy fight.

Other than fighting, sometimes when you warp into a sector, there will be no enemies. Instead, there will be a large piece of space junk floating around. In and/or around this there is often a minefield and pieces of scrap. This can really test your piloting skills and be a great way to get some extra cash. Which is useful for those other times you warp into a sector without enemies. These sectors (which have a symbol on the map) will have a trade station with some potentially new equipment for you, and/or a repair station for hull damage.

Each of the classes has something to do now, more or less. Particularly if you're a man or two down.
A) Pilots, well, they pilot.
B) Weapons Specialists typically man the guns.
C) Engineers handle power distribution, preventing the reactor from overheating, repairs, dropping shields for hull repair, and rebooting the ship for a virus purge.
D) Scientists deal with scans upon entering a system, as well as using viruses and programs.
E) The Captain issues orders as well as (typically) helping everyone else out. For example, if life support is damaged, but the engineer is busy dealing with power distribution, a good captain might go ahead and fix that up. Or he might man one of the guns, etc.

As far as number of sectors go, there are more than enough. They're randomly generated, so there's a good deal when you start up the game each time.
Finally, no, the station/hub in Sector 0 is not yet available to us, though the groundwork for teleporting from location to location is in now for boarding, so, fingers crossed we'll see all that in the coming months.
