Shield Sections

Post by mrsandman321 » Sat May 20, 2017 11:40 pm

It's a classic starship trope to have sections of sheilds (forward, aft, etc.). Having this would allow decisions to be made about power allocation. This would presumably allow, say, forward shields that have been destroyed to be repowered by transferring power from other sources/shield sections.

having shields divided into four sections (front, left, right, rear) would give the engineer something to do during combat

its definitely a problem that the engineer doesnt have a whole lot to do once you get a good reactor

This would also give the pilot more to do and make combat and positioning more important.

Say your front shields are failing you could (depending on how this would be implemented) take power from other sections to reinforce it or angle the ship so a side that is still powered is facing the threat.

This could also introduce more shield component types and modifiers; I.E. a shield that is very strong but only protects the front of the ship or one that only protects the rear for those that like to run away. ;)

I like this idea, because I love being the engineer and having something to manage. HOWEVER, I think it would complicate things during combat, and add more problems with shield management constantly changing. I like the current shield management with a constant shield charge, and the sheld boosters.

Thinking on this more, I'm thinking the Weapons Specialist should be have access to the actual controls of the shield sections. The Engineer handles the power flow, but the Weapons Specialist determines to which sections the power flows. The Captain can order which sections to focus on, but the actual buttons are pressed by the Weapons Specialist.

This is to give the WS more to do during combat while the main gun recharges. It also makes it so the Engineer and the WS have to partner around power. I like the idea of there being a need of team mates to coordinate outside the Captain as the nexus. This lets the Captain focus on strategy rather than execution.
