Unofficial Weekly Discussion #9: Liars Dice

Post by EngBot » Thu Feb 07, 2019 1:32 pm

This weeks discussion is going to be about the lounge game of Liars Dice
How do you feel about the game? Were the rules easy to understand? Do you have questions? What's the best/worst hand you've seen?

The current rules make it so a round can go on forever. Since the dice being bet on can be changed to anything if the other number increases and vice versa. The game needs a way to break out of the recursive loop. Either by preventing the number from going down or something else. Also I think the player should have the option to fold.

It seems to me the most logical method of preventing the infinite loop bidding possibility is to have the restriction changed to "the first number must go up"; while the second number, the number on the die, may go up or down. So if bidding started as 2 twos then 1 four would not be a valid bid; but 4 ones would be a valid bid.

I played a 4 player match of liar's dice; and it seemed that the winner was typically the person after the person that made the most outrageous bids consistently.

Unless I'm missing something, there is no infinite loop.

Player A can bet on quantity and face value of the die.

Player B can call, raise quantity, or raise face value (and if the face value is raised, player B can claim any number of that. For example, Player A may claim 3 ones, player B can claim 4+ ones or anywhere from 1 to X*5 of twos through sixes, where X is the number of players).

betting continues until someone calls, absolute cap where the next player MUST call ought to be 20 sixes, though my playgroup has not tested this.

Unless a player is somehow allowed to claim there are more than 20 of any die (which would be a bug), there is no way to get stuck in a loop.

Fun fact, it is a 1 in 3.65 quadrillion chance to roll 20 sixes (4 players x 5 dice). If everyone rolled a new set of dice three times a minute, it would take a sixth of the age of the universe before you rolled 20 sixes (2.3 billion years) on average.

Anyway, Liars dice is great fun with friends, and the bluffing is the perfect dynamic for a motley crew :) My only request to the devs is to please allow players to wager some of their allowance on the dice games!

You are missing that once you raise the number for either you can lower the other one
