Starmap almost unusable on Vive + Quick fix suggestion

Post by WeirdWizardDave » Sun Dec 01, 2019 10:31 am

Just bought the game, lots of potential, lots of issues with the VR implementation too! But the main one which is holding me back right now is the starmap is a massive pain to use with the Vive wands, seems like it was designed with the Oculus or WMR in mind as using the touchpad to move around is intensely frustrating. When you touch the pad unless you are bang on dead centre you immediately zoom off in some direction often at very high speed, I find control is difficult even without taking your thumb off the pad, but if you do take your thumb off it become impossible and you're going to end up zooming around for a minute or two trying to get back to where you wanted to go.

2 Quick things could massively improve this, the first is a simple deadzone, the second would be to make the input relative to the point the touch-first started rather than the absolute value. Those two things, which should work fine as universal changes would at a stroke make the starmap vastly more usable on vive wands.

Obviously longer term it would be nice to have a more direct VR style interaction with the starmap and frankly not have it fill the entire view. But as it is trying to captain in VR on the Vive is almost more hassle than it's worth.

Thanks for the report

This was partially addressed in a previous update but I agree that the starmap could be more usable with motion controllers / VR. It's still using the same basic input methods as in flat screen mode.
We'll try and prioritize it for our next VR polish pass
